Kyle Moody is a doctoral candidate in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at The University of Iowa. His research
specialties include digital media, multimedia production, online communities,
cultural industries, ethnography, video games and content creation. His research examines
how video game fans are involved in the production and dissemination of fan and
journalistic content.
In Fall 2012, Moody’s course Specialized Reporting and Writing: Video
Games & Communication, was the first course offered by The University of Iowa that focused on the journalistic aspects of gaming and the game industry. The course collaborated with leading video game publication IGN,
which provided unprecedented
production assistance and input to assist student learning and enhance
collegiate journalism practices. It received extensive coverage outside
of the academy as well as inside of it, including news stories published by
Jim
Romenesko, Iowa Public Radio, Kotaku, and The University of Iowa’s
own esteemed student newspaper The Daily
Iowan.
In Spring 2013, Moody was awarded the Ballard Seashore
Dissertation Fellowship for academic year 2013-2014 and the John F. Murray Outstanding Doctoral
Student-Teaching Award by School of Journalism and Mass Communication for
Academic Year 2012-2013.
Moody has worked as a social media researcher and consultant for
Iowa’s Digital Studio for Public Arts and Humanities. He has also worked for noncommercial radio in various positions at WMUB (89.7 FM, Oxford, OH) and WWHR (91.7 FM, Bowling Green, KY).
